Buying a mattress is a tricky purchase. It can cost more than other pieces of furniture and have a much bigger impact on your health and wellness. So how do you find the right one and sleep well after you get home? Here are some tips to help you out.
- Visit a Store
Even if you plan to buy a best mattress online, go to a store anyway. Learn everything you can from the sales staff and lay on every mattress that interests you, especially if you are looking at buying an unfamiliar type of mattress, such as switching from an innerspring mattress to a memory foam one.
Take your partner with you and lay on each mattress for about 20 minutes. Also, try moving around and see how motion affects the other person. If motion transfer is an issue with your current mattress, you may want to look for one that better isolates motion.
- Question Special Features
It’s important to be an educated consumer. Pay attention to densities, resilience, coil weight and number, warranties, reviews and any special features that the company is highlighting. One to watch for is the pillow top. Some pillow tops wear well and feel great for years. Others feel luxurious initially but compress quickly, leaving you with little added comfort.
- Look for Good Customer Service
A mattress may last you for 10 or 15 years, possibly even two decades. That’s a long time to live with a purchase that doesn’t meet your expectations. It’s important to see if the company offers a liberal return policy before you buy. Some companies offer risk-free trial periods and won’t charge you return shipping or any fess to return the mattress. Other companies may charge a restock fee, shipping or other fees to take the mattress back.
- Check Out Your Pillow
A new mattress can feel and work differently with your body than the old one. It may be firmer or softer, changing the space between your head and your shoulders and their position when you lay down. A new pillow may be needed to better fit your needs.
